At the International Workshop on Agritourism 2022, Monica Nadegger, Birgit Bosio and Christoph Engl presented the School of the Alpine Pasture as best practice for a successful combination of tourism, agriculture and education.
The example shows how projects such as the School of the Alpine Pasture can bring people together to learn old crafts and culturally valuable knowledge. So-called "Almlehrer:innen" pass on their knowledge to locals and guests alike. The school passes on this knowledge, which is otherwise in danger of being lost. This benefits not only the region itself, but also the participants, who gain an intensive experience in the region and are thus bound to it in the long term through their meaningful help on the alpine pasture.
The article also shows how MCI Tourism Master's students have developed new business models for the Alpine school. The following customer benefits were defined in the process: Deceleration, self-realization, self-awareness and escape from reality. The strengths of the project include a high level of credibility and authenticity, profound knowledge, a broad network of alpine pasture teachers and participants, in some cases still great untapped potential, the approach of gentle tourism and a strong sense of togetherness. The business ideas developed by the students focused on the one hand on diversifying sources of income and on the other hand on involving existing customers.
