Summary of this study
Ski touring on groomed pistes (= piste ski touring) has experienced a strong upswing in recent years. However, there have only been a few studies on piste ski touring and piste ski tourers. More research has therefore been called for that also takes into account the opinions of the various interest groups. This study aims to provide deeper insights into the trend of piste ski touring, including the associated risks, opportunities and areas of conflict. Two qualitative studies were conducted: Study A included interviews with 14 piste ski touring experts, while Study B interviewed 14 experts from the cable car industry representing key stakeholders.
The results showed that piste ski touring is a growing trend, as the number of ski tourers in ski resorts is increasing. The increasing number of piste ski tourers offers economic, health and social opportunities. However, both expert groups also confirmed burdens: on the one hand, safety problems due to overcrowding and, on the other, financial burdens for the cable car infrastructure.
The studies also revealed various areas of conflict: lack of ascent lanes, irregular behavior and lack of parking spaces. Conflicts between different mountain users (especially alpine skiers versus piste ski tourers and piste ski tourers versus cable car operators) were particularly evident. Another problem is that cable car operators often have no income from piste ski tourers. Solutions to these burdens, risks and conflicts are still rare, and many questions remain unanswered.
The following important findings arise for management: Piste ski touring is a growing trend in the European Alps with increasing economic, health and social significance. The interests of users have changed over time. There are risks of collision between different athletes and cable car operators. Piste ski tours offer new opportunities for smaller, specialized ski areas and their restaurants. Experts recommend separate ascent tracks for greater safety. The financial participation of this group of athletes is still an unresolved issue.
Findings from this study
- Ski touring on pistes has increased significantly in recent years and has become a major trend in winter sports.
- This trend offers economic opportunities (e.g. for smaller ski resorts and restaurants), health benefits for athletes and opportunities for social interaction.
- The growth of piste ski touring is associated with burdens, particularly in terms of safety risks due to overcrowding and financial burdens on the cable car infrastructure (as many ski tourers use the infrastructure without paying).
- The studies showed that conflicts arise between the different groups.
