Vacation on the farm

Farm accommodation is an important part of the Austrian tourism industry: around one in 30 tourist overnight stays in Austria takes place on a farm. Researchers from Graz and Innsbruck have now analyzed the agrotourism cluster in more detail by surveying more than 500 businesses that offer accommodation on farms.

The project was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism and carried out in cooperation with the Research Center for Tourism and Leisure at the University of Innsbruck and Joanneum Research.

The study shows that "farm vacations" have developed particularly successfully in recent years. Over 90% of the partner farms state that renting out accommodation on their farms has had a significant impact on their income. This has led to numerous investments on the farms. The analyses show that this ancillary activity of guest accommodation is of central importance for the partner farms.
