Organoid: From nature to the wall

A journey through wonderful natural worlds with Organoid®
Christoph Egger, co-founder and Managing Director of Organoid®

F.acT: Organoid® promotes the use of natural materials for sustainable interior design. Please give us a brief introduction to Organoid® and its products.

Christoph Egger: Organoid® stands for sustainable design solutions that harmonize nature and aesthetics. The Tyrolean company creates a unique sensory experience with handmade surfaces made from real natural materials - from flowers and leaves to Swiss stone pine shavings. The products can be used in a variety of ways, whether as wallpaper, furniture decor or on glass, and bring the beauty of nature into the interior. Organoid® remains true to its vision: to create a sustainable future worth living with innovative, climate-neutral materials.

F.acT: What materials are used to create your products?

Christoph Egger: Organoid® uses only natural, sustainable and rapidly renewable raw materials that are carefully selected and processed in a resource-saving manner. These include, among others:

  • Leaves & flowers - e.g. rose petals, cornflowers or sunflower petals
  • Grasses & hay - such as hand-cut alpine hay from Tyrol or mountain meadow herbs
  • Spices & herbs - including lavender, Mediterranean herbs or coffee powder
  • Mosses - moss residues from moss wall production
  • Natural fibers - such as sheep's wool or Swiss stone pine shavings

These materials are mainly pressed onto breathable flax fleece, but also onto fine gold paper, leather-like Flexi or PVC-free adhesive foil. The gentle process creates versatile surfaces with a natural aesthetic.

F.acT: Organoid® was nominated for the prestigious German Sustainability Award in 2023 - congratulations! How does this "living sustainability" manifest itself in your company? (Perhaps with a view to the 9 SDGs listed on the website?)

Christoph Egger: We combine ecological responsibility with high-quality design - for a sustainable future worth living. Our practiced sustainability is reflected in numerous areas of our company - in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • Health & Wellbeing (SDG 3) - Our natural surfaces are free from PVC, solvents and harmful additives, promoting a healthy indoor environment and are even suitable for allergy sufferers.
  • Gender equality (SDG 5) - Organoid® is committed to equal opportunities, fair wages and the advancement of women in technical and creative professions.
  • Good jobs & economic growth (SDG 8) - We offer secure, sustainable jobs in Tyrol with social responsibility, regional value creation and long-term corporate development.
  • Innovation & infrastructure (SDG 9) - Our sustainable production combines traditional craftsmanship with innovative technologies to create resource-saving solutions for modern design.
  • Sustainable consumption & production (SDG 12) - We rely on regional raw materials, upcycling materials and plastic-free shipping to minimize our environmental impact.
  • Climate protection (SDG 13) - Our production is climate-neutral and runs on 100% green electricity from hydropower. In addition, transport routes are optimized and our vehicle fleet is fully electric.
  • Life on land (SDG 15) - By using alpine hay and other natural raw materials, we support the preservation of biodiversity and promote traditional agriculture.
  • Peace, justice & strong institutions (SDG 16) - We stand for ethical corporate governance, transparent communication and fair partnerships along the entire value chain.
  • Partnerships to achieve the goals (SDG 17) - We actively promote environmentally friendly innovations through partnerships with sustainable companies, research institutions and designers.

F.acT: How important do you consider the circular economy in your company and to what extent are you already trying to implement it in your products?

Christoph Egger: For Organoid®, the circular economy is a central component of our sustainable corporate philosophy. We focus on closed material cycles in order to use resources efficiently and minimize waste.

Our products are made from rapidly renewable raw materials and upcycled materials, such as flowers, alpine hay, lavender stems or moss residues from other productions, which are thus given a new life cycle. We also pay attention to the durability and recyclability of our carrier materials to ensure that they are used as sustainably as possible.

In our production, we use 100% green electricity, do not use PVC or solvents and optimize packaging and transport volumes to further reduce our ecological footprint.
