The Interreg Bavaria-Austria-funded project "New Work in Tourism" develops and tests innovative forms of work in order to strengthen tourism regions in the Alps as attractive places to work and live and to make the industry fit for the future. The project is supported by the Faculty of Tourism at Munich University of Applied Sciences in close cooperation with partners from Bavaria and Austria - including MCI Internationale Hochschule GmbH and the regional tourism and development organizations Achensee Tourismus, Regionalentwicklung Oberland KU and Regionalverband Oberpinzgau - who combine scientific expertise and a practical perspective.
Initial situation
Challenges such as a shortage of skilled workers, high workloads and the desire for more flexible, meaningful working models in tourism characterize the tourism and leisure industry. New Work serves as a common framework for creating an attractive working environment, attracting and retaining employees and strengthening the participating tourism regions as liveable working and living spaces.
The aim
The aim is to develop a practical New Work strategy and an action plan for tourism regions in the Bavarian-Austrian region between April 2025 and March 2028, to build a digital knowledge platform on New Work, to train New Work coaches, to strengthen cross-border networks and to attract new target groups to the Alpine region via a digital workation and coworkation database. What is new about the approach of this project is that both the employer and provider perspectives are included. As part of a holistic New Work approach, the project looks at dimensions that have not yet been strategically and conceptually examined as a whole and implemented in the Interreg program area.
